Windsor Locks Bridge Rehabilitation
Project Details
The project was completed in three stages, with work zones established in the northbound right lane, southbound right lane, and median to minimize impacts to traffic.
The work included bridge deck milling, deck patching, deck end reconstruction with road plates, CLE membrane installation, paving, prefabricated expansion joints, elastomeric concrete headers with preformed joint seal, and asphaltic plug joints. Under-bridge work included jacking and bearing replacements, structural steel repairs using steel and UHPC, and complete structural steel painting. The project also included the removal and replacement of two overhead sign structures located on the east and west sides of the bridge.
The project consisted of a major rehabilitation of the Dexter Coffin Bridge carrying I-91 over the Connecticut River, Amtrak, Route 159, and South Water Street. The work included structural steel strengthening using ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), which was placed by coring through the bridge deck and pumping the material into forms beneath the bridge. The project also included the replacement of the bridge’s large structural bearings, requiring the installation of trolley beams to safely remove and install the bearings beneath the structure.
