Avon Bridge
Project Details
The Avon Bridge Project replaced an aging, flood-prone bridge with a wider, higher structure that improved roadway safety, mobility, and flood resilience. The project also realigned the Route 10/Old Farms Road intersection, widened Route 10 to include a dedicated left-turn lane, created a public park and boat launch, and preserved significant archaeological resources discovered during construction. The project was completed ahead of schedule while minimizing impacts to the traveling public.
The project faced several significant challenges, including a delayed winter construction start, preservation of the Brian D. Jones Archaeological Site, varying foundation conditions that required four different foundation systems, innovative bridge girder installation without a temporary trestle, and accelerated construction staging to minimize traffic disruptions while completing the project months ahead of schedule.
