East Windsor Bridge Replacement
Project Details
This project was majority completed over 2 seasons, Stage 1 in the first season being the replacement of the existing sanitary sewer line, and Stage 2 in the second season being the replacement of the bridge. The bridge replacement utilized steel piles for the abatement and wingwall footings, precast substructure components consisting of the abutment and wingwall stems, erecting new steel girders, and forming and pouring a new concrete deck. There was also major site work involved with this project which realigned the roadway to create a safer roadway for the public.
The project consisted of a replacement of a sanitary sewer under Scantic River and the full reconstruction of Bridge No. 01524 during limited road shutdowns. Stage 1 of the project was to install a new DIP sanitary sewer pipe under Scantic River which was done by installing cofferdam sheets extending half the width of the river at a time and major dewatering setups to get this work done. Stage 2 of the project was the bridge replacement which was a very long process with the most complex tasks being the of removal of the existing truss superstructure in a single pick, and then installation of very large sheeting cofferdams and dewatering setups for construction of the new Abutments.
