Middlebury Bridge Superstructure Replacement
Project Details
The project involved the replacement of Bridge No. 01160 carrying Benson Rd over I-84. The existing superstructure was a 4-span bridge with three piers and was fully replaced with new steel girders and concrete deck. The substructure received major repairs including new Pier caps and infills. The project was a success and the road was opened to the pubic a month ahead of schedule.
The project had an allowable 245-day road shutdown period in which the bridge must be demolished, replaced and re-opened. This project was heavily contingent on utility relocations of a water main, sanitary force main, and gas main to allow the bridges to be removed and replaced. We completed the utility relocation work with a temporary bridge over I-84 during the first season. The purpose of this is to make sure that all utility relocation work is completed during the first season and focus on the bridge replacement during the road shutdown on the second season.
