SUMMARY

The project consist of replacing and existing bridge over South Frontage Road and I-95 Exit 83. The new structure will be a curved, single span bridge consisting of four 8′-3-1/2″ tall girders to carry the traffic to I-95. The new bridge is in a new alignment from the existing structure. In order to allow space for the new construction, a portion of the existing bridge was removed to allow both traffic to remain on the existing structure and construction of the new bridge.

The project included the installation of 92ea micropile to support the foundations for the new bridge abutments.

Key Challenges

A critical portion of the project was the selective demolition of the existing structure. It was initially planned to utilized cranes to perform the demolition, however due to the limited space and limitations of operations hours, ROTHA created a plan to utilize temporary supports and excavators to remove the existing structure. Using excavators to remove the superstructure allowed the work to be completely quickly and safely with minimal impacts to traffic.
